Paint protection guide

Ceramic coating vs wax vs sealant

Not sure how to protect your car's paint after a valet or detail? Here is a plain-language comparison of the three most common paint protection options, with advice on what works best for Irish weather and daily drivers.

What is car wax?

Wax is a traditional paint protection product made from natural carnauba or synthetic polymers. It gives a warm, deep gloss and beads water nicely for a few weeks. It is the cheapest option and easiest to apply at home, but it wears off quickly — usually within 4 to 8 weeks, especially through Irish winters and regular rain.

Best for: show cars, short-term gloss, or owners who enjoy topping up protection every month.

What is a paint sealant?

Sealants are synthetic products designed to last longer than wax. They bond more tightly to the paint surface and typically protect for 3 to 6 months. Sealants give a slick, glass-like finish and are more resistant to rain, road salt and UV than wax. They are a good middle-ground between weekly waxing and a full ceramic coating.

Best for: daily drivers, commuters, or anyone who wants protection that lasts a season without constant reapplication.

What is ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds with the paint, creating a long-lasting protective layer. A professional coating can last 2 to 5 years with proper care. It offers strong hydrophobic properties, UV resistance, and makes washing much easier because dirt and grime struggle to stick.

The downside is cost: professional application requires paint decontamination and sometimes machine polishing first, so it is a bigger investment than wax or sealant. However, it is the most durable option for Irish cars exposed to rain, salt and grit.

Best for: owners who want long-term protection, easier maintenance, and a premium finish.

Which should you choose?

If you want the easiest, most durable protection for a car you use every day, ceramic coating is the strongest choice. If you prefer a lower upfront cost and do not mind reapplying a few times a year, a sealant is excellent value. Wax is ideal for a weekend show car or for owners who enjoy the ritual of hand finishing.
